Mindfulness Training
As part of therapy, we have the option to explore how to bring a mindfulness practice into your life and moment-to-moment experience. Mindfulness is the modern vernacular for a way of being that humans have cultivated for millennia in contemplative traditions. Mindfulness describes a quality of attention that is attuned to what’s actually happening in the present moment, not caught in our stories or judgments about what’s happening. Research shows that our brains are plastic, capable of changing their wiring by the power of our intention. The most powerful element is our attention — where we practice putting our attention grows stronger through the principle of neuroplasticity.
Increasing our capacity for mindful attention is a significant resource for a human being. It allows us to “drop out” of stressful thinking and challenging emotions by grounding our attention in the actual sensations and perceptions that are prior to our thoughts and judgments. Mindful attention has a simple, open, accepting quality. From a place of mindfulness, we can observe our thoughts and feelings without getting lost in them. As the old analogy goes, we becomes the sky that has the room for any type of cloud that moves through. Reconnecting to our sky-like, already-present awareness helps calm our nervous system and brings qualities of perspective, ease, and connection.
As a meditation and mindfulness practitioner of 12 years, I’ve attended over 15 meditation retreats and am passionate about how we can all bring this amazing resource of simple, mindful attention into the complexity of our lives. For clients seeking a more resourced nervous system, a calmer mind, or who feel pulled towards beginning a meditation or mindfulness practice, I am here to help. We can explore different mindfulness practices together, and I can help tailor the practice in a way that works for you.
Although this may sound like a separate arena from therapeutic work, it actually dovetails quite naturally in the work that we do in bringing kindness, acceptance, and curiosity into your inner experience. By bringing mindfulness into our work together, you’ll develop a greater depth and stability for meeting the reality of what’s happening inside of you.
